MOSCOW, November 21. /TASS/. Mikhail Mamiashvili has been re-elected as the President of the Russian Wrestling Federation (RWF) following the RWF annual reporting and election conference in Moscow.
The 2024 RWF conference took place in Moscow on Thursday, and Mamiashvili, who has led the organization since 1997, ran unopposed for RWF president.
In addition, the RWF held elections for vice president positions, choosing Georgy Bryusov, Omar Murtuzaliyev, Varteres Samurgashev, Arsen Fadzayev and Natalia Yarygina for the posts.
Mamiashvili, 61, won a gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics, and is a three-time World champion (1983, 1985 and 1986) and three-time European champion (1986, 1988 and 1989).
On February 28, 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued recommendations to international sports federations to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from taking part in international tournaments, citing Moscow’s special military operation in Ukraine as the reason.
Following the IOC’s recommendations in late February 2022, the majority of global sports federations decided to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from all international sports tournaments.
In late March, 2023, the IOC recommended to permit individual athletes from Russia and Belarus to take part in international sports tournaments, but only under certain conditions. Specifically, athletes from the two countries should not be “actively supporting” Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine and must compete under a neutral status. Russia and Belarus were also banned from participating in international team events.
