It’s good to see some veterans zoom to the tops of their respective lists this week.
The Scottish crime-fiction great Ian Rankin, 64, is back with his 25th novel, “Midnight and Blue,” featuring series sleuth Detective Inspector John Rebus. Rebus, unlike his creator, retired in 2007 but continues to work closely with the Edinburgh police. The new Rebus debuts at No. 2 on the fiction list, second only to “The Waiting,” a new thriller by Michael Connelly. Connelly, 68, is a writing powerhouse who is never far from the list. This is his 39th novel.
Bob Woodward, 81, is at No. 1 on the non-fiction list with his 21st political book, “War,” in which he takes us inside the three conflicts that most dominate U.S. news: Ukraine-Russia, the Middle East and the domestic clash between the Democrats and Republicans.
